Go Green this holiday season
Did you know The City of Montgomery is promoting a green holiday season? This green has little to do with cash or Christmas trees. Instead, the City is challenging residents to cut the waste generated by parties, special gatherings, excessive wrapping paper, cardboard and tissue paper.
Statistics show that 25 percent more trash is generated between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day amounting to an additional 25 million tons of trash in the United States. To reduce this holiday trash spike, consider these tips on reducing holiday waste:
- Make the wrapping part of the gift. For example, place jewelry inside a pair of gloves or cookies on a decorative tray.
- Create ornaments out of ordinary household items.
- Make your decorations, such as garland from strung popcorn or potpourri from household spices like cinnamon and cloves.
- Reuse old gift bags and bows.
- Bring your own bag when you go shopping.
- Send holiday e-cards.
- Don’t toss out your leftovers. Send some home with guests or prepare a meal for an elderly person who has trouble making their own.
- Invest in rechargeable batteries and reduce the number of batteries you'll have to throw out next year.
