A journey to City Hall...
This month’s message by Council Member Craig Margolis
Who would have ever thought that a required volunteer project in college would evolve into a lifelong passion for community involvement, culminating in an appointment to City Council.
My first adult efforts involved the disbursement of monies to a variety of United Way agencies. This necessitated my becoming personally involved with the operations and outcomes of various agencies providing services to the community. I was able to see first hand how lives could be impacted as a result of my work.
Fast forward a number of years and a family move to Montgomery, Ohio. I loved living in the community and initially took everything for granted. When a shopping center was slated for the former drive-in movie property at the end of my street, I was not pleased. I attended several City meetings and was impressed by the City’s resolve to maintain a residential environment. I saw first hand how a few people, supported by many, could make a positive difference. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Not long after this a request for volunteers appeared in the Montgomery Bulletin. My application for a position on the Montgomery Board of Zoning Appeal and the Planning Commission was approved. I participated fully, learning the processes, the zoning codes and the protocols. I also volunteered for special assignments including work on the Triangle Property, the Montgomery Corridor Design Guidelines and the Environmental Commission, assuring that the Zoning Codes were environmentally friendly.
Why volunteer? Because volunteering is a win-win situation for everyone. You meet Montgomery neighbors and make new friends. While the City is benefiting from your actions, you have the opportunity to hone your skills and develop new ones.
I often hear people say “there is no time in my life to do anything else.” Initially, I probably thought the same thing myself. Yet a city like Montgomery offers a host of volunteer opportunities focusing on a wide variety of interests and time commitments. Start small and then gradually consider taking on more responsibilities. In addition to feeling good about your efforts, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the wonderful City in which we reside. For ideas, check the Montgomery Bulletin and the City of Montgomery website. Or simply call Joyce Yock, the Montgomery Volunteer Coordinator, at 792-8329.
Who knows, perhaps you’ll be the next person considering running for City Council!
